Once in a while, the FCC makes an appropriate decision. They happened to make this one on election day, which is why I’m so late to noticing it. This opens up a path for members of the White Space coalition to begin providing high speed access using frequences previously allocated to television to prevent interference. This is a great move, and could be instrumental in finally allowing a feasible technology utilizing broadband as an instrument to finally reach past the last-mile. A very positive thing, especially for rural and mountainous regions.

Here’s to hoping that this opens up a new era for high speed access in the USA. We can expect to start seeing speeds as high as 10 MBps (For comparison, Comcast offers speeds of 10 Mbps. White space should be as high as 8 times as fast as current high speed offerings).
With any luck, we could see initial offerings as early as Q2 ‘09.
